Kapono Prepares To Defend His Three Point Shootout Crown

 By Andrew Dubowec

Jason Kapono has been working hard to defend his All Star Game Three Point Shootout title. The Raptors training staff designed a set of ball trays that are similar to those used in the All Star competition, so Jason can practice effectively for the event.

Kapono is a lights out shooter. This video shows him hitting virtually every three pointer. When he finally misses, he's met with a good natured, yet noisy response from his team mates and other onlookers.

Kapono is trying to become the first back-to-back winner of the competition since Peja Stojakovic of the Sacramento Kings successfully defended his crown in 2002 and 2003. This year, Stojakovic returns to the event representing the host New Orleans Hornets. In his last appearance, he was the runner-up in the 2004.

Jason and Peja will be joined by Kobe Bryant of the LA Lakers, Daniel Gibson of the Cleveland Cavaliers, Richard Hamilton of the Detroit Pistons and Canada's Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns.

Here is how each three point shooter is doing so far this season from beyond the arc:

                          Kapono: .510 (leads NBA)
                          Nash: .470
                          Hamilton: .468
                          Gibson: .467
                          Peja: .466
                          Kobe: .347

The players will participate in a two-round competition, featuring five shooting stations set up around the three-point line with four balls worth one point each and one coloured "money ball" worth two points at each location. Each player will have one minute to make as many shots as he can. The top finishers from the first round advance to the finals.
